The Heart of a Hero: Redefining Everyday Acts of Courage

Being a hero doesn’t necessarily mean doing something grand or dramatic. For Alya, a secretary at ADCO Law, a hero is someone willing to sacrifice for others without expecting anything in return. “Someone sincere,” she says, reminds us that the idea of a hero today goes beyond those who fight for a nation. It also includes those who contribute in small but impactful ways.

Alya describes how many young people now participate in “Good Friday” or give food to those in need. It may seem like a simple gesture to some, but that small act of kindness means so much to those who receive it. Alya believes that being a hero is about doing something wholeheartedly, even if no one sees it.

When asked who she considers a hero, Alya chose the person closest to her, her mother. “My mom is my role model and a true all-rounder,” she says. Her mother, a teacher who can teach, support, and be a friend to her children, has inspired Alya in many ways. As a working mom, her mother balances work responsibilities with her role as a parent without losing her closeness to the family. “Whenever I have a problem, I always turn to my mom,” Alya recalls warmly.

To Alya, courage is also an essential quality of a hero. You don’t have to do something big to be a hero, but just having the courage to speak up, even when it might seem strange or wrong to others, is heroic. For her, the courage to speak up and make even small changes is truly admirable.

Alya has also experienced the impact of a “little hero” in her life. One day during college, she had a minor accident and was injured. Her closest friend, who happened to be at her place, quickly stepped in, took her to the hospital, and even contacted her mother. “In that moment, I felt truly cared for,” Alya recalls.

Ending the conversation, Alya describes ‘sincerity’ as the word she feels captures the essence of a hero. To Alya, a true hero does good without seeking anything in return. “Caring that comes from the heart, that’s what gives me the essence of a hero,” she says. Alya believes that acts of kindness, no matter how small, can have a significant impact when done with sincerity.
